The Challenge

"Planetary Health" is the most pressing problem for our lives as seen in the climate change and ocean pollution, loss of forests and biodiversity, and pandemics of infectious diseases on a global scale. In order to solve these problems, it is essential that academia, industry and government work closely beyond borders, without being confined to conventional research or industrial fields.

With its excellent universities/research institutes and companies, Japan has the potential to lead the world in the life science field, but has yet to make a sufficient contribution. Compensation at Japanese universities and research institutes is relatively low, and the departure of talented people from research positions and overseas research institutes has become a serious problem.

The Innovation

EIS is playing a central role in the establishment of the Planetary Health Innovation Centre (Phic) and the launch of specific business activities for client companies, creating a new industry-academia collaboration scheme between the University of Tokyo and the Institut Pasteur to enable professors and researchers to make valuable contributions to the real world.

Furthermore, through the activities of the Phic, EIS leads efforts to create innovations in the bioeconomy and to realise various social implementations in cooperation with the University of Tokyo, Keidanren and East Japan Railway Company.
